Comprehensive Eye Examinations

A comprehensive eye examination involves more than checking your vision or updating your glasses prescription. We take a thorough approach to evaluating both your vision and overall eye health.

Our examinations include a series of assessments designed to evaluate how well your eyes see, how they work together, and the health of the structures within your eyes. Each examination is tailored to your individual needs, visual concerns, and medical history.

  1. Pre-Testing

Your examination begins with a series of preliminary measurements that provide important information about your vision and general health. These may include:

    • Blood Pressure Measurement: Evaluates blood pressure, an important factor in overall health that can also affect the eyes.
    • Color Vision Testing: Assesses your ability to distinguish different colors.
    • Stereopsis (Depth Perception) Testing: Evaluates how well your eyes work together to perceive depth.
    • Visual Field Screening: Assesses your peripheral vision to help identify potential visual field abnormalities.
    • Autorefraction and Keratometry: Provides initial measurements of your refractive error and corneal curvature to assist with your vision assessment.
  2. Vision & Visual Function Assessment

We take the time to review your medical and ocular history, discuss any visual concerns, and understand how your vision affects your daily activities. This portion of the examination includes:

    • Medical and Ocular History Review: Discusses your general health, medications, previous eye conditions, and current visual concerns.
    • Distance and Near Visual Acuity Testing: Measures how clearly you see at different distances.
    • Ocular Motility Testing: Evaluates eye movements and coordination.
    • Pupil Evaluation: Assesses how your pupils respond to light.
    • Refraction: Determines your glasses prescription and evaluates the correction needed for clear, comfortable vision.
  3. Ocular Health Evaluation

The final portion of your examination focuses on assessing the physical structures and overall health of your eyes. In addition to a thorough clinical evaluation, we utilize advanced diagnostic imaging to obtain a more detailed understanding of your retinal and optic nerve health. This includes:

    • Intraocular Pressure Measurement: Measures the pressure inside your eyes as part of the assessment for glaucoma and other eye conditions.
    • Anterior Eye Health Examination: Evaluates the eyelids, tear film, cornea, iris, and lens for signs of abnormalities or disease.
    • Retinal and Optic Nerve Evaluation: Examines the structures at the back of your eyes to assess retinal and optic nerve health and identify potential signs of ocular disease.
  4. Advanced Retinal Imaging

As part of our approach to comprehensive eye care, we routinely offer advanced retinal imaging to provide additional information about the health of your eyes.

    • Optos Daytona Plus Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging: Captures a broad view of the retina, including peripheral areas that may be difficult to visualize through conventional retinal photography. This helps us document retinal health and monitor changes over time.
    • Topcon Maestro2 Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) with OCT Angiography (OCTA): Provides detailed cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve, allowing us to evaluate structures beneath the retinal surface and monitor subtle changes that may not be apparent during a conventional examination.

Additional diagnostic testing may be recommended based on your individual eye health needs and clinical findings. Learn more about our imaging technology.

A Thorough Approach to Your Eye Health

We believe that a comprehensive eye examination should address more than how clearly you see. By combining careful clinical evaluation with advanced diagnostic technology, we aim to identify potential concerns, monitor changes over time, and provide recommendations based on your individual visual needs and overall eye health.
